IMPROVISATION

Everyday life is an improvisation. In between the routine bits, we are constantly making things up - plans, conversations, meetings, travel. Our routines help to ground our lives, but often they become a drag, especially at work. Repetition becomes tiresome - blunting our senses, constraining our thinking.

Spontaneous or unplanned improvisation is a game in which the rules are simple: 1. accept and build; 2. listen and look; 3. allow your body to lead you; 4. go with the flow. It is more important to keep the 'game' going than to come up with a clever idea.

Random Acts improvisation workshops are aimed at teaching you how to let go, stop thinking and act. The improvisation is the performance.

Improvisation comes in many forms and is used by actors and directors for different ends. In the form of role-play, it is widely used in training at work. Random Acts Improvisation workshops concentrate on spontaneous impro because it is the most enjoyable and fun type. It can be used for both personal and professional development as well as creating plays. (see Performance)

The key to spontaneous improvisation is developing a playful attitude. Playing, not working at problems, will often open up the most creative solutions.

Improvisation is grown-up play -

essentially serious and very silly, at the same time.
