RANDOM ACTS

ABOUT

I set up Random Acts after finding out that what I had always feared – spontaneous improvisation – was within my capabilities. Not only was I capable of improvising with no planning, but it was a lot of fun, it boosts self confidence and encourages creative thinking. These are all useful in training situations where communication and self-presentation, team-building and idea development are important.

WHO AM I

Training & Teaching

I trained at Central School of Speech and Drama and taught drama to 11-16 year olds in north London for 4 years. Then I moved to the Cockpit Theatre and Arts Workshop in Marylebone where I worked with all ages, in the theatre and out in the community.

Theatre and Community Development

I taught acting and devising, directed plays and acted in some. At the same time I developed ways of using the arts in multi-ethnic community development. I worked with Marylebone Bangladesh Youth Assn., helped found Mu-Lan Theatre Co and supported a self-organised youth group on Lisson Green Estate.

In the Cockpit I was responsible for running the Arts Tech for 14-24 yr olds. This was a series of training workshops integrating drama, dance, visual arts and music that led to regular performances.

T.V. / Film / Radio

In 1990 I went to Bristol and worked for HTV West in the family and children's dept. I was involved in programme making and training a group of young people in acting for theatre, tv, film and radio.

Boal and Drama-therapy

When I returned to London I trained with Augusto Boal in Forum Theatre techniques, while setting up a Youth Arts project for Islington YMCA. During this time I worked for Y Touring, the Wellcome Centre for Bio-medical Research, the National Theatre Education dept., >>>>

Working with Boal led me to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Drama-therapy at Roehampton Institute (University of Surrey).

Medical and Business Training

Apart from the time I spent in Bristol, I have been involved in medical training continuously throughout my career. I am an associate member of the Harry Partnership, a business and medical role-play agency. This work has given me in-depth experience of professional training at a post-graduate level.

We all tend to look for patterns in the world around us.

Every time you look up into the night sky, you probably know at least one constellation. These are one of the oldest forms of pattern-making to explain the world, used by sailors and navigators for at least 3 millennia.

This pattern-finding skill is the precursor to being able to tell a story, or a joke, to sell something, to heal somebody or write a book.
